Ebook About
"A riveting and vivid account. ... A remarkable story. ... It reads like a Hollywood screenplay." —Foreign AffairsThe astonishing true story of the Berlin Tunnel, one of the West’s greatest espionage operations of the Cold War—and the dangerous Soviet mole who betrayed it.Its code name was “Operation Gold,” a wildly audacious CIA plan to construct a clandestine tunnel into East Berlin to tap into critical KGB and Soviet military telecommunication lines. The tunnel, crossing the border between the American and Soviet sectors, would have to be 1,500 feet (the length of the Empire State Building) with state-of-the-art equipment, built and operated literally under the feet of their Cold War adversaries. Success would provide the CIA and the British Secret Intelligence Service access to a vast treasure of intelligence. Exposure might spark a dangerous confrontation with the Soviets. Yet as the Allies were burrowing into the German soil, a traitor, code-named Agent Diamond by his Soviet handlers, was burrowing into the operation itself. . . Betrayal in Berlin is Steve Vogel’s heart pounding account of the operation. He vividly recreates post-war Berlin, a scarred, shadowy snake pit with thousands of spies and innumerable cover stories. It is also the most vivid account of George Blake, perhaps the most damaging mole of the Cold War. Drawing upon years of archival research, secret documents, and rare interviews with Blake himself, Vogel has crafted a true-life spy story as thrilling as the novels of John le Carré and Len Deighton.Betrayal in Berlin includes 24 photos and two maps.

Book Betrayal in Berlin: The True Story of the Cold War's Most Audacious Espionage Operation Review :

It's uncanny how this project has affected my life ever since I was a young soldier in Berlin. About 5 or 6 years ago author Steve Vogel called me at my home telling me that CIA headquarters had given him my name as a contact for his proposed book. Of course I was shocked by his call, but pleased to cooperate with him after understanding his purpose. When he sent me a complimentary copy of the book, I was surprised by its length and the rigor of his research. I was riveted by his narrative and pleased to learn more about my intel comrades with whom I shared such intense days. I was also surprised that Vogel was taking a deeper dive into the story than the first print documentary about this project called "Spies Beneath Berlin", published in 2002 by British historian David Stafford. I did not learn about it until 2005 and wrote its first Amazon review back then. I was also surprised that my review would eventually lead to the British film documentary in 2011 (now on YouTube) using the same title. All in all, that project has been at the center of my life, most of which I could not speak about until recently. Thanks for your superb, still timely documentary, Steve. And thanks for using my birth name "Kregg", which I was known by until recovering my Ukraine-born dad's original family name many years later when I was in graduate school.
Steve Vogel's third book dives deep into the story of how the Americans and British overcame their lack of high level spies inside the Kremlin in post-war Berlin and how they were betrayed by one of their own. Their plan to dig a long tunnel between the American and Soviet sections of Berlin to tap the Soviet telecommunications system was a brilliant success in every way - except for the fact that a small number of highly placed KGB officials knew all about it. Vogel's research and storytelling skills are once again on full display as he offers background and personality of the key players and some harrowing near catastrophes.Whether you like Cold War history, spy thrillers, or just a great story, you'll want to read this book. The most intriguing character, as we all know from our reading, was... George Blake. Vogel was among the few people who have tracked him down and interviewed him at his dacha in Russia - fantastic work!
